Product Design

The images above are of my final prototype.   Dimensions are 11"Hx10"Wx6"D.   It contains a fully functional light inside and mounts on a wall with it's "Z" clip.

The Windsor series by Brunswick Billiards was the style I selected to extend it's product line by adding a sconce light.  The oval which is located on both the pool table and the cue rack is replicated on the sconce light.

Research Methods

-          Observational  research.  To see how someone with that much money had decided to make their billiard parlor inside their large home.   Research finding concluded that this person used antique furnishings to aesthetically unite his billiard room.   All pieces of furniture were purchased from an antique dealer in England.   The pieces he selected were from the 1880’s to the 1920’s.

-          Market research.   By documenting the product line of three of the largest pool table manufactures (Brunswick, Legacy, and Olhausen) I was able to spot deficiencies in the product line.   In this case lighting was not included in any of the three companies product lines, however Brunswick did have a link to lighting which  had appeared to be under construction.

-          Unconventional research.   Phone calls were made to billiard table manufactures to receive first hand insight to how the companies handle with individual customer needs.

-          Textual Research.   While talking with these billiard manufactures I was mailed some catalogs to see how they present their product to customers all around the country and world.   Their use of digital renderings and photo shop together was not all that believable to the experienced 3d renderer and photo shop enthusiast.

Observational Research

Senior Thesis Proposal

For my senior thesis I have decided to focus on game room design.   The intent is on researching product lines of billiard table manufacturers.  With the information I collect I will then pull details of the existing product designs and apply them to new products that can then accessorize the game room.   This will grow the companies product line and accurately target customer needs.   The concept derives from audio/video companies and the way they enhance the user's experience.

I intend to create three accessory designs that would help furnish a billiard room, one of which will be produced.  Research will allow me to decide which three of the objects will be designed according to market demands and product opportunity.

Research methods will include, but are not limited to the following:  Observational research, market research, and customer research.   Observational research will allow me to interact and question pool players to gain insight and other perspectives to customer needs.   Market research will allow me to see the array of sales being offered to the customer.  Traditional and transitional are the areas I will be focusing on because they are the most common in this rather conventional industry.

In conclusion, I hope that my designed product and research will enhance the user's experience while in the environment which is tailored around the center piece of the room.  In this case, it is the pool table.
